The reason why the ignition coil always burns out

January 20, 2024

The ignition coil is one of the key components of the engine ignition device, providing sufficient energy for the spark plug to generate sufficient electric sparks and improve engine performance. The ignition coil is mainly composed of primary coil, secondary wire fixing, and iron core.

When the primary coil is powered on, as the current increases, a strong magnetic field is generated around it, and the iron core stores magnetic field energy; When the switching device disconnects the primary coil circuit, the magnetic field of the primary coil rapidly decays, and the secondary coil induces a high voltage. The faster the magnetic field of the primary coil disappears, the greater the current at the moment of current disconnection, and the larger the turn ratio of the two coils, the higher the voltage induced by the secondary coil. The voltage from low to high is converted in this way. Similar to an ordinary transformer, the turn ratio of the primary and secondary coils of the ignition coil is large, transforming the low voltage electricity on the vehicle into high voltage. The difference is that it repeatedly stores and releases energy at different frequencies based on different engine speeds, and operates intermittently.

Causes of ignition coil burnout

The main cause of ignition coil burnout is aging and breakdown of the insulation layer or damage to the switch transistor. The large gap of the spark plug leads to a large load on the main coil, high heating, and fast aging of the insulation layer. The small gap of the spark plug leads to a large discharge current, high heating, and fast aging of the insulation layer in the secondary coil. The assembled ignition coil may have poor insulation material durability, large coil internal resistance, high heating, and low quality of the tertiary tube, resulting in a shorter lifespan.

1. First, take a look at the problem with the generator. If the power generation is too high, the ignition coil can easily burn out if the load is too heavy. However, if the power generation is really too high, then vehicle electrical appliances, such as light bulbs, will often be damaged; Of course, quality issues with accessories cannot be ruled out, so it is best to measure the power generation first.

2. If the spark plug gap is too large, adjust the gap or replace the spark plug;

3. If the quality of gasoline is not good, try replacing it with higher grade gasoline;

4. If the cylinder compression ratio is incorrect, adjust the compression ratio;

5. If there is a program malfunction on the computer board, you can go to the repair shop to check the car with the computer and clear the erroneous information. If it still doesn't work, there may be a problem with the car's transmission.

6. The power supply voltage is unstable;

7. The resistance of the high-voltage wire is abnormal, replace the high-voltage wire;

8. There is a short circuit in the secondary circuit;

9. The high primary current of the ignition controller causes the ignition coil to overheat;

10. Poor operation due to high temperature and high pressure waves;

11. There is a very small chance that the problem is with the coil itself. You can try a different brand;

12. The igniter assembly block is not working properly;

The ignition coil itself is a transformer, just like a transformer in household appliances. When the voltage changes within the specified range, the transformer will not burn. Usually, burning the transformer occurs when the transformer is overloaded, which causes this situation. Therefore, when solving this problem, we should try to find the cause of the overload or component aging.
